Daily Grind Closed

The FNP Biz blog reports that the Daily Grind Coffee House and Cafe has closed down. I never had a chance to visit this place. Anyone out there count this as one of your faves?

If that’s the place I think it was, I never went there either. The selection at Downtime Cafe, across the street, was always more appealing to me. Always a shame, though, to see any place close down. And, as always, I hope whoever moves in after them appreciates the building and makes the most of it.
The Daily Grind is (was?) a coffee shop out on Yellow Springs Road and Old Farm Drive (on the NW side of Ft. Detrick). It was in a converted bank building in front of a strip mall. Always seemed like a strange place for a coffee shop to me.
The converted bank did make for a strange layout, but it was pretty nice once you got inside. They catered to the working class, and I’m pretty sure they closed at 6pm. The coffee shop drive through was a good idea too, but driving by, it really just looked like a bank, and not a coffee shop.
That was short lived, they weren’t open very long. Agreed with others above, it was a strange location and it really didn’t stand out since it still looked like a bank. The coffee and pastries were decent the few times I stopped in.
My husband and I went to the Daily Grind frequently. The interior was very nice, but I have to admit that the their service was always spotty. If you live or work around this area of town and would like a new coffee place that’s an alternative to Starbucks on 7th Street, I highly recommend Loco Johnny’s on 177 Thomas Johnson Dr in the strip mall with Weis. (I think Guy also gave it a mention here when it first opened a while back.) The coffee is great and the service is great too. Johnny himself is a really nice guy. I recommend his Loco Johnny iced tea–a nice blend of chai and black tea. It’s delicious!
I never tried the Daily Grind but have always had great experiences at both Loco Johnny’s and the Downtime Cafe. It is real nice to have some local flavors around!!!
I agree with fungusblogs. I live close by in Whittier and prefer the coffee shop in that area just because it is there in the whittier shopping center. Daily Grind was good wiht the coffee but prefer the short walk to get one in the same neighborhoold.
There are many reason for the close if I had to bet. The location wasn’t great and the building was too big for a coffee shop, I’m sure it cost a lot just to have the lights on all day. The staff was pretty bad too. Just didn’t seem to care about what they were doing at all. Every time I went there (not often, but usually in the afternoon), I didn’t see a customer in sight and the staff was either smoking outside or napping on the furniture.
I was at the Daily Grind once. I have to say, too, that it did seem strange that it used to be a bank; however, they spruced it up pretty nice. It was pretty big. It’s just sad to see the place close down and another Starbucks open up. (downtown Frederick) Downtime closed down too—and is now Cafe Nola. I was at In The Streets and Nola looked pretty nice (and busy). I didn’t make it in there yet. Dave, the owner, made a great move. I think just his popularity alone brings in the customers, so he’ll do well.
wow, closed? this is news to me but I can’t say that I am anymore surprised then anyone else whose chimed in. I have to say, though, I’ll miss the place. It was the best place to study for the LSAT. About as quiet as a library (since there was hardly anyone there) and I was able to drink my coffee in the ‘stacks’ so to speak.
I was driving by the old Daily Grind building tonight and there was a banner out front that said Dunkin’ Donuts was coming soon! Interesting!
It should be opening soon…my kids ask every time we pass (which is very often)
I guess it’s some consolation to know that Dunkin Donuts–itself a purveyor of some pretty decent coffee–is occupying the old Daily Grind space.
