Cafe Kyoko Closed

2007 September 12

This news makes me sad.  Cafe Kyoko has closed.  I’ve only been there a few times, but it’s my daughter’s favorite restaurant in Frederick.  I can’t tell you how many times she’s met friends there for dinner over the past two years since she’s had her driver’s license.  I think the downtown needs a diverse restaurant like Kyoko.  Does anyone know what “New American” means?

Cafe Kyoko, the Japanese-Thai sushi restaurant at 10 E. Patrick St., closed recently.

However, a new restaurant is on its way: a sign on the door leading to the second floor space says, “Cafe Kyoko is no longer in business. Please visit Quynn’s Attic, featuring new American cuisine, later this fall.”

Walkersville resident Michael King said today he plans to have the new restaurant open by the end of October. Quynn’s is named for Quynn’s Hardware, a store that had been located in the building for 100 years.

Cafe Kyoko is located above Proof Bakery.

After the Sushi posts on here a few weeks back I went and tried this place and loved it. I went back a couple of times. I wish I knew about this place a lot sooner.

So it made me wander what type of food new american cuisine is also. Wikipedia has this a definition – I have never eaten at restaurant that has this type of food.

“New American cuisine a term for upscale, contemporary cooking served primarily in restaurants in the United States. Combining flavors from America’s melting pot with traditional techniques, New American cuisine includes ethnic twists on old standbys, Old World peasant dishes made from luxury American ingredients and molecular gastronomy.”

Acacia is an example of New American cuisine. As stated by Becky per the Wikipedia definition, it is basically a combining of element of different traditional cooking styles. As Acacia calls it, Fusion; another name for this style, though Fusion typically refers to Pan-Asian regional cuisine.

Looking forward to the opening of Quinn’s Attic housed in the old Cafe Kyoko. Michael King the new owner and chef is returning to Frederick after living and working in New York City for the past 15 years.
Opening his own restaurant has been a long time dream and we wish him the best. Let’s all show our support as he opens for business the beginning of Nov.
    See you there.

Wow, I am disappointed. Cafe Kyoko was one of our favorites. We’ll see what the new place brings, but I’m not too excited for it at the moment.

I wish I had known about this. They had some of the best sushi in town. And what I wouldn’t give to taste their thai rice pudding again. :(

I’m not at all excited about “new american” food. Isn’t there enough of that?

We are losing a wonderful asian restaurant.

Wow, that’s too bad. I loved going to Cafe Kyoko. Hopefully the new place will be good.

I can’t say I’d miss Cafe Kyoto. Mediocre offerings at best. As far as sushi goes…forget about it, they didn’t have a clue. My recommendation for Sushi is House of Kobe in Hagerstown. There is nothing in Frederick, or for that matter most of the mid-Atlantic as good. Their original Sushi chef moved to NYC, but the new crew are nearly as outstanding. If you love Sushi and Sashimi, don’t bother with anything in Frederick…load up the wagons and head to Happy, Happy, Hagerstown. House of Kobe is right of Dual Hwy, exit 32B.

I’ll miss Kyoko’s. I took my homecoming date there 3 years in a row. Found this about the new owner.

The best sushi in frederick is at Roppongi’s in the hillside shopping center on route 40 the golden mile. We have gone there for over 5 years and never had a bad meal. If you prefer to have a traditional Japanese meal , then they have that too.
