A New Group In Frederick

August 29, 2007 · 13 Comments

From the FNP

If there’s one thing Frederick doesn’t have enough of, 38-year-old investment advisor Henry Becker told me this morning, it’s events where young professionals can meet and socialize.

That’s why he started Frederick Young Professionals Networking Group two days ago.

Becker, a New market resident, moved from Pittsburgh to Frederick two years ago, and although he noticed a lot of people like him around town — married, kids, working — he couldn’t find anywhere where his peers could get together.

Well, now there is. Becker is using the online social networking site MeetUp to organize get togethers: www.businessnetwork.meetup.com/412/

And the first gathering date is set: 6 p.m., Sept. 19 at Isabella’s Tavern and Tapas, 44 N. Market St., Frederick.

I’m in, although I don’t think I qualify as young, or even professional :)

Young professional, but I’ll be in class

I am 44, but very immature for my age. Does that disqualify me?

    Frog,

The intent of the group is to get linke minded people together. Perhaps your sage wisdom will be a benefit to all. As well, since you are a friend of guy and he was kind enough to put a plug on the site I am perfectly fine with you and Liz (unmetioned in your comment) joining the group.
As founder and organizer I am not dictator and techincally you are a genXer. Your in if you want to be.

Technically, I think my age bracket is caught between a Baby Boom and genXer. Straddling that razors edge.

I shall put it on my calendar, as long as I don’t have to go to too many other “business” meetings conducted in drinking establishments between now and then.

So, uhhhhh, Henry…the question begging to be asked is- will you be precluded from your own social group in 3 years? Remember, ages 25-40 only. It’s like Menudo, but for grown-ups.

I am starting the group so young
professionals have a chance to network and socialize. When I age out then I guess I move on. For now, I am founder and organizer but I would be happy to turn over organizer to a group of folks. In the mean time, my hope is that it starts something cool for young professionals in Frederick. I see things as it is possible for things to live beyond oneself which is called a legacy. Those that look to do good for the world and others tend to leave a legacy.

Cynics on the other hand do not tend to leave a legacy. They leave $12 million dollars to their dog.

There is a similar group already in existence, that formed back in February, called ArtNext. They are a group of progressive and creative people who come together as a social network. They have already done several things, including organizing midnight movie showings of pop culture films, an artist market, music events featuring local rock bands, and fashion shows. They get together and create opportunities that are not available or few and far between.

Hi, Shaun is their a website for ArtNext?

  • Shuan // September 18, 2007 at 6:39 pm

Hey Guy, we are actually working on the website and hope to have it up and running soon. I will keep you posted as soon as it is ready to go live.

This event was pretty good, considering it was the first time. This group is definitely a good idea!
