A bunch of new restaurants have either opened or will be opening soon all over the Frederick area. For example …
- Green Turtle
- Hinode Japanese Restaurant
- La Dolce Vita Cafe
- Il Porto Fine Italian Restaurant
- Jackson’s Restaurant
- Cafe 611
- Foster’s Grille
- Greenberry’s Café
- The Wingery
I know I have missed some, but you get the idea. My free-for-all question to you is—which one of the new Frederick eateries are you most excited for? Which one is making your mouth water? Sound of in the comments.

We went to Hinode this past friday night and I’ll just state the words that came out of my mouth: “This is the best food I’ve eaten in my life!” My husband thought it was pretty risky to say that. HA
I’ll say two more words. Rosemary. Chicken.

We also went to Hinode Friday. We sat in the bar, to enjoy all the action. I got a very good bowl of Chirashi (raw fish on rice). Yummy.
I will admit that I have been waiting for Hinode to open for a while. Il Porto next time.
I will be going to Green Turtle when they open because a number of the old Pargo’s bar staff is going there.

I’m looking forward to that old Xhale eyesore on 355 getting converted into a Mexican restaurant.

none of them, especially the ones that are chains

I really want to hit up Il Porto and since I’m a wing fan I will have to visit the Wingery when it opens. Beers at Green Turtle will also be fun, it looks pretty big.

None of the chains that is for sure. You do get consistency with the chains but we are losing the independents.

Il Porto is great. I ate there last Friday evening, and the Bolognese sauuce was teriffic.

I’m with Bob.
is there anything worth mentioning in Frederick that isn’t food related?

Enjoy the Turtle….Mt. Airy is ok, but the Germantown is better. Hoping for the “best” in Frederick.

Greene Turtle is always a good time! And what a fantastic success story, to start a “small independent” business in 1976 and have it grow the way The Greene Turtle has. Let’s not forget people operate these restaurants and even chains pay their employees in U.S. Currency allowing them to support their families and buy goods and services. Which supports our economy. And those employees who work for these chains very well, may be big supporters of small businesses in their community. Sounds like a Win-Win to me!!! And trust me there are PLENTY of small businesses that I am forever loyal to. I think all can thrive in our economy.
Oh, and can’t wait for Greene Turtle and….hey are we getting a Red Robin?? I thought I heard we were.

I’m with Minday. My faves are not usually chains, but they all started somewhere. It is in the American spirit to build a business and grow.
I am really looking forward to Il Porto.

HINODE IS WHERE ITS AT! I WENT THERE THE DAY BEFORE IT OPENED FOR AN INVITE ONLY DINNER PARTY FOR RESIDENTS THAT LIVE ON THE CREEK, AND ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE WAS NOT UP TO PAR, THE FOOD MOST DEF. WAS. I GO THERE ALL THE TIME! (THE SERVICE HAS GOTTEN MUCH BETTER)

So like are there any reviews for any of these restaurants? Reviews that manage to surmount comments about bacon in Ceasar salad.
Or should the august posts of the previous seasoned culinary gaints suffice?
Doesn’t anyone know how to cook?
JJP // September 7, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Most of these places haven’t opened yet so it is hard to provide a review.
I just posted something in the Il Porto thread - though I haven’t eaten there enough to provide a decent review …

My wife and I went to Hinode last nite and it was awesome. Sushi was fresh and fast. Dinner box was great and Have not had better Negamaki anywhere in this area. Service was top notch. Please Patronize this one you wont be disappointed.

I have dined twice now (dinner last Saturday and lunch today) at Hinode Japanese Restaurant. It’s excellent. Such fresh, fresh sushi. The salmon melts in your mouth. The tempura is light, flaky and not greasy at all. Service was very good even though the waitress was new.
One downside: for dinner the other night I ordered the dinner box while my husband ordered the sushi/sashimi combo. His dinner came out about 10-15 minutes after mine. I hate it when one person in our dinner party is sitting waiting for his/her meal. They need to coordinate that better.
Overall it’s a very good place and I plan to return there again soon.

I recently ate at Hinode with my girlfriends. All I can say is it was GREAT. Would go back again.

I wouldn’t be excited about Green Turtle. I’ve been there three times since it opened and have experienced forgotten food, food that was an hour late, botched mixed drinks, and common beers they did not have(that the waitress did not comment on- just gave my friend a similar beer and only mentioned it after she said something). I have not had one good experience. We thought we would let them smooth out the “newly opened” wrinkles, but it’s been months since they opened! Never going back. But La Dolce Vita Cafe, very cool. And reasonably priced compared to other downtown coffee.

Don’t bother going to jacksons, I hear they are closing soon. Green turtle is great, hate to see wag’s lose the burger title but Five guys do make great burgers.

Those of you who’ve been to Mangia & Bevi in Urbana: any new comments on menu hits or misses and the experience in general? My significant other isn’t that big a fan of Italian food (not like me, anyway), but I suspect we may give it a try if it seems worthwhile.

FF, we go there pretty often. I still think they have the best pizza in town (only my opinion). I think my favorite entree is the homemade sausage and broccoli rabe. My oldest daughter loves their penne a la vodka. My youngest likes their waffle fries and pizza.
I don’t think the salads are worth ordering although I haven’t had any of their larger salads. The house salad is sort of lame. The homemade bread w/olive oil and cheese for dipping is fabulous.
I’d say the only bad experience we have had is once my husband ordered a linguine w/clams and there were lots of bits of shells in it. We let them know about the problem so hopefully they will be more careful. He also enjoys their minestrone.
The wine list has gotten better and they feature a wine of the month.

If you haven’t had a chance to eat at Bangkok Thai Kitchen yet, I would strongly suggest that you do so. Without question it’s the best Thai in town. One thing that’s really nice is that they haven’t Americanized the food. It’s the real deal. But be warned when the menu says spicy they mean it, and there’s no question about the use of fish sauce in this kitchen, which a lot Americans might find a bit over powering, so if your not sure ask them to cut back on it. Dinner portions are large enough to share, as long as I’m not joining you for dinner. All that said, I’m still a fan of Thai Rice, and hopefully they can meet the challenge

Where is Bangkok Thai located?
lizfrog // May 19, 2008 at 11:39 am
It’s in the Westridge Shopping Center on 40.

* Green Turtle - every salad I’ve ordered tastes like they use bottled dressing. A pet peeve of mine.
* Hinode Japanese Restaurant- not consistent. Sometimes they do a great job and the food is delicious- other times…not so much. And,I’m a bit skeptical of any restaurant that can’t brew it’s own iced tea! Gee..how hard is it?
* Il Porto Fine Italian Restaurant- food is generally good but not phenomenal. It ain’t no Marsala’s
* Jackson’s Restaurant- ugh
* Cafe 611- too much fried stuff that tastes like it’s out of a 100lb bag
* Foster’s Grille- where is this?
* Greenberry’s Café- Never heard of it
lizfrog // May 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Foster’s Grill is in Urbana, in the new plaza by Turning Point. I don’t think Greenberry’s is open yet. They are going to be in the new plaza they are building at the corner of Crestwood Blvd. and Corporate Drive. I drove by there the other day and it doesn’t look like anything is open yet.

Thanks, lizfrog, for the scoop on Mangia e Bevi. I will give their pizza a try and dedicate the occasion to the memory of the late, lamented Luke’s Pizza. Just wish Mangia was as close to my office as Luke’s was.

I work in the building behind where they are center Crestwood. The center is called the Westview Corner. They only signs up on the buildings so far is Greenberry’s and you can see progress inside of it everyday. Kinkos is open and next to it looks like there is going to be a smoothie place and a dry cleaners. No other signs have been posted or progress to the interior on the others that lead me to believe anything else is coming soon. I heard there was a rest. call the Wingery and another 5 guys but am not sure….
FrederickFan // May 21, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Is Greenberry’s a chain? Anybody know anything about type of food etc.?
lizfrog // May 21, 2008 at 12:27 pm
It looks like it’s a coffee and tea shop with franchise locations mostly in Virginia. Here’s the menu I found:
