Keys to the City
2007 August 22
I had to make a trip from Buckeystown to Walkersville yesterday. Since it was raining, I thought I’d take the scenic route up Market Street. I was surprised to see the “Keys to Frederick” project, which the FNP featured on Saturday and was also on WHAG NBC25 on Friday starting around Md School for the Deaf.
I think they’re really cool. What do you think?

I saw the “keytar” downtown; very clever!
Does anyone have a list of where all the Keys are? I know there is one on the corner of South Market and All Saints.
I noticed them too. There is one right at the start of Bakers Park next to the street. Looked like there were postcards all over the key. Missed the article. Should go check it out.
I would love a list too. I went to HG Stadium on Saturday to specifically see and photograph the Keys, but was told after Friday’s showing they moved them to Baker Park. I drove all around Baker Park (of course I had to since I could find no parking space) but could not find the Keys anywhere. At sundown I went back to the Stadium and just took pic sof the Fireworks after the game.
There’s one in front of the Delaplaine and one along the new Carroll Creek area by Ben and Jerry’s. There’s a couple in front of the old court house, one by the entrance to Baker Park at the end of Church Street and another by the entrance to the Talley Center. I’ll let you know if I see more.
Thanks Liz – I can’t get downtown until Saturday so I hope they are still there.
Seems like the newspaper reporter who wrote the stories on the Keys goofed by not asking the exact locations and/or including a map.
I agree. Considering there’s 30 of them, and those few that I mentioned I just happened to see today, I’d like to know where they all are too!
That “keys to Frederick” link in the post mentions that they are going to launch a website with the locations. Maybe by Saturday it will be up and running so check there before you head downtown. The keys are supposed to be around until October so hopefully you’ll find them!
I just saw them for the first time today, pretty cool. I always thought the crabs in Baltimore were cool, so it nice to have our spin on the same idea.
I tried to snap a picture of one as I drove by, not a great picture but you get the idea – http://www.flickr.com/photos/shortfatkid/1213100098/
I hate to be such a stick in the mud, but I think they are pretty stupid. Maybe I am just a snobby artist, but it seems like with $300K the city could have purchased some nice public sculpture, like a bronze fountain or some such thing.
Chicago did it, Jackson Hole did it, DC did it, Baltimore did it, yes, yes, yes. It’s boring now. We can’t come up with something uniquely Frederick?
The keys are unique and specific to Frederick. Francis Scott Key is an integral part of our history.
The Keys project was organized and sponsored by the Arts Council, not the city and the money raised goes to the cost of the key frame, the artist and finally to the Arts Council for grants to the many Arts organizations in the Frederick area that need funding. Let’s support the Arts!
How sad…I am sorry to report that driving down East Street today I noticed one of the Keys had been vandalized. There is also one on Patrick Street with black spray paint. On a brighter note, has anyone seen the one that looks like a guitar? It is on Church Street just past the visitors center. It is my personal favorite!!!
The one by the entrance to the Talley Rec Center was also vandalized with black paint. That’s so sad.
Its sad and very frustrating to hear that some of the keys have been vandalized! They have only been on display less than a week! And a great deal of thought, creativity, and hard work went into them. I thought Frederick was a nicer town than that.
The Arts Council is planning a website with map and info on all the keys – it should be up and running any day now – I think its keystofrederick.org. I”m looking forward to seeing them all next week myself.
Here is an article about the vandalism.
So sad about the vandalism. I emailed the Art Council about a listing or map but have gotten no response as yet.
I just got back in from downtown and took pics of the ones I could find. It was so hot and sunny so I didn’t last too long, but here’s what I found http://www.flickr.com/photos/8743797@N02/
It’s in the set “Looking for Keys of Frederick”
Enjoy.
PS. I too like the guitar one although one of the stings was loose today when I saw it.
Guy, where is the one in you pic? looks kewl.
It is very sad about the vandalism to the keys. Just think how long the artist took to create their masterpiece. And someone has the nerve to take a few minutes to spray paint/vandalize it. Ugh! It actually makes me angry–at whoever the vandalizer is!
Even though I think that they are stupid, it is terrible that they have been vandalized. What a moron! This person needs to be publically tarred and feathered; or at least spraypainted.
Am I the only one who thinks the Arts Council could have come up with a better idea?
It was near Carroll creek before La Paz.
Here is the site with a pdf map. http://www.KeystoFrederick.org
My daughter and I biked around town over the weekend and found as many keys as we could. We were very sad to see that four that had already been vandalized with black spray paint — less than a week after they were installed. And it’s not like they were “tagged” — more like just defaced.
We also found a few more that appeared to have been scratched with a knife or key. Morons.
I cannot imagine why anyone would want to deface public art. At the same time, I’m surprised that the artists/organizers had not anticipated this and applied some sort of anti-graffiti protectant. Live and learn.
The reward for information leading to a conviction in this vandalism is up to $2,500.00. That’s up from the $500.00 that was offered just this morning.

My husband and think the Key’s to the City art looks like trash. I love art and am all for it, but these things look awful. The only one I’ve seen that I like is the with all the keys on it.
First let me start off by saying cool idea, Baltimore did it like geshhh years ago. . . .
Let me start with the object they choose, what a bad choice. Surley they could have come up with something better.
Then who approved the art that went on them? What bad taste they have. I think I need to join that committee.
The Keys are very relevant to the city of Frederick as a symbol. I hope the artists don’t read your comment.
Everywhere you turn, people are commenting how great the keys look on the streets of Frederick. I am sorry you don’t like them. I guess that is what art is all about, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
When I pass by a family and hear “Mom, there is another key!” from a young child with such jubilation, that means to me that the project was a neat idea for Frederick.
I encourage you to act on your suggestion to get involved in an arts organization and contribute all your ideas.
Most of my friends think the same thing about the keys. Can’t wait for them to come down. Eye sore.
I agree with your comment on Art.
Thanks for the encouragment to join the organization, I will check into how to do so.
Looks like someone was arrested for vandalizing the keys.
Thank goodness the Keys are gone!!!
Thank goodness!
Now they can be auctioned for the Art Council and create the opportunities that inspired those talented artists to create them in the first place.
