Friday Free-For-All: Burgers

2007 June 8
by Guy

It’s going to be in the 90’s today so I suppose that means our journey into summer is complete. And with summer comes BBQs and with BBQs comes hamburgers.

Smacking some burger patties on a grill is pure summer gold if you ask me, but I don’t always have time to fire up ol’ sparky. Sometimes I have to go out to get my burger fix.

So the question of the day is: Where is your favorite place to get a burger in Frederick?

I’ve never been overly impressed with any of the burgers I’ve had in Frederick, but I LOVE the Black Angus burgers from the butcher at Giant Eagle cooked up on my grill. Brewer’s Alley has a pretty damn good burger, but not as stellar as I would expect.

FYI, Five Guys is finally open downtown.

As a long-time burger expert, I’d say Five Guys Famous Burgers are darn good, especially for a range-grilled burger.

Wags’ burgers are supposed to be about the best around. It’s been years since I’ve been there, but once the smoking ban goes into effect Feb. 1, 2008, I’ll give you an update.

Fuddruckers always ranks at the top of the list for chain restaurants, but we don’t have one.

McDonald’s plain burger is probably the worst around.

I consider myself somewhat of an expert and have found the burgers at Jennifer’s and Danielles (Tauraso’s) to be very good. Since they changed their menu, Glory Days is good. Late at night, Waffle House. Of course, if you do not care about your heart, Five Guys. Wags is overrated, however their Rueben is great.

Oh yeah, the knife and fork burger at Brewers Alley is purty good!

For my money, nothing can beat Wags. Despite being a big guy, I go for quality, not quantity. Thats why I don’t like Brewers Alley or Five Guys.

Sure the burgers are big, but the flavor just isn’t there.

I’m not sure if anyone here remembers Sigs Hideaway (now the location of the Courthouse Parking Deck) but Alice (the cook) made fantastic tasting burgers. They weren’t big, but they didn’t have to be.

I may be young, but my experience so far is that restaurants that know their burgers have no flavor make sure the patties are large enough for you not to notice*

*this does not apply to LaPaz. No flavor and small burger :(

In Frederick…Wags. But I have been known to wander out to Red Robins for their burgers. I would love for Frederick to get a Red Robins of their own.

I just had a pretty good burger at the Main Cup in Middletown for lunch today. Pretty good menu for a coffee shop. But 5 guys have to be one of the best around…with super greasy fries.

Five Guys + wonderful fries, spilling out of the cup.

Agree with Wags, and I like Five Guys too, although I KNOW it’s no good for me! Also intriguing is the hamburger on the pretzel bun at Sheetz; I’ve had more than one of those late at night.

Oh, I have an interesting story about what happened to me after eating a Red Robin burger at Lakeforest Mall!

I walked by the Five Guys downtown this evening and it looked like it was pretty busy!

I’m still waiting for restaurants to offer Boca Burgers…

Catherine, I know they have veggie burgers at Brewer’s Alley. Not sure if they are Bocas though.

Barley and Hops has great burgers. The meat is delicious. If I am craving a burger in Frederick that is where I go.

I agree the the Burgers at B&H are good, especially served RARE!

By the way, Barley & Hops is running a June special: $1.00 beers happy hour (HH is all day Monday and until 7PM other days at the non-smoking bar only, I think) and ANY glass of Scotch for $3.00. They have some very good, single malt scotch. I thought they’d made a mistake, at first.

Thanks Liz…sometimes restaurants refer to “veggie burgers” as hamburger with vegetables and not TVP, etc. I’ll have to check it out.

Catherine, my daughter is a vegetarian and just got one at Brewer’s Alley last week. It’s definitely meatless.
