Village Lanes Closing

2007 April 26
by Liz

Declining use is causing Village Lanes on North East Street to close it’s doors for good on May 21st. From the News-Post:

Opened in 1960, the duckpin bowling alley has been used by non-profit groups for fundraisers and was home to leagues of all ages.

Use has declined, however. At their peak, the lanes were used for more than 200,000 games a year; that number was down to 80,000 last year.

That’s such a shame. We had lots of fun at that bowling alley when our girls were little and we lived right around the corner from that shopping center.

I never learned to play duck pins. But it is another sign of people’s tastes changing. The Walkersville Bowling is still open and a great place if you like duck pins. The food at the bar is really good.

That is such a shame! I have been there for several gatherings, bday parties and the occasional family outing.

Terrace Lanes is still open. Try 10 pin.

Looks like duckpins are slowly going the way of the dodo bird. Seidel’s in my old Baltimore neighborhood is closing its doors as well. They never cared if you bowled in your stocking feet.

It’s official, the Village Lanes closed for good on Monday night, despite the efforts of many people to keep it open:

Somebody needs to do something with that building….another bowling alley…maybe 10-pin, or a country bar…something. There’s not a lot to do in Frederick. That would be a fun addition!
