For better or worse, visitors to Frederick are always wondering where Starbucks is in downtown. Therefore, I think one is needed, but I'm not so sure we need quite as many elsewhere.

I lament that there's no Trader Joe's up here. Maybe I should stop going to the one in Gaithersburg; I wonder how much traffic they get from Frederick County?

I've counted 6 Starbucks in the Frederick area: Rt. 26, 7th St., Rt. 40, Westview Promenade, B & N at the mall, and the new Giant in Urbana. Maybe this is dangerous to admit, but I like Starbucks--they sure helped ratchet up the American coffee scene. I also like the local shops, too, though--most American communities don't have the selection for coffee that we do.

My husband and I checked out MOMs on the afternoon of the grand opening. Parking was not a problem at that time. I was very surprised at the small size of the store. It felt cramped. Of course, I was comparing it to Common Market because it is the only other organic/whole foods store I know of around here. (Yes, I realize that MOMs is a chain and CM is a co-op.)

I have to say, I prefer CM. It is larger, has better bulk and produce sections and the staff are very friendly. Even on opening day, the staff at MOMs seemed kind of stand-offish. Might have been because it was so busy, so staff were rushed. I don't know.

The prices were about the same. One plus for MOMs is that everyone gets the sale prices. At CM you must be a co-op member to get the sale prices or use store coupons. (Believe me, if we were planning to move away, we'd be co-op members).

Despite that, I'm more inclined to shop at CM. I like supporting a local business and the store itself is nicer. I really expected MOMs to be bigger. Their selections were decent, but everything was so close together.

Oh, and off the top of my head I can count four Starbucks in Frederick. There might be more....and I'm including the new B&N cafe, which sells Starbucks coffee. And I can also buy it in the grocery store! Do we really need another Starbucks location?

My Organic Market is amazing! The prices are great for organic food, and they have pretty much everything you can get at a normal grocery store in organic form. Plus a good amount of vegetarian stuff. It's also great because it's run entirely on wind power =D

The Common Market is a local business and we should support it. I try to buy bulk as much as possible and MOM's has a very small bulk section. Plus the prices were a little bit more on te items that I buy on a regular basis. I know that the Common Market offers their employee's, even part-timers, insurance which is great.

Frederick is in many ways becoming like Rockville. And yes, Starbucks has been discussion about opening up downtown. I have known about this for awhile. As to the Frederick Coffee Company, my problem is the smell of the coffee beans when they over roast them. I will be checking the other coffee shops out but whether or not I go back to them depends on their hours and soy options.

It is interesting to note that MOM's seems so environmentally friendly on the website, but they don't even have a bike rack.

No mention of specific stores though. The brochure says hte first quaretr of 2009 for a delivery date.

Thanks. I've wondered about the spot on 355, too. Or, maybe in that Westview part II being developed on Rt. 85?
