I have never heard of this place. Is it just an organic grocery store or is it anything like the other store on Buckeystown (cant remember the name)?

  2. 2007 April 25

The other store you’re probably thinking of is the Common Market. My Organic Market is a local chain (I’ve been to the one in Rockville) and yes, it’s similar to the Common Market. But I prefer the Common Market because it’s original to Frederick.

  3. 2007 April 25

It’s about time! We’ve been waiting awhile for them to open to check them out!

  4. 2007 April 25

That parking lot is going to be a zoo! I think I’ll wait until the middle of the week to check it out. I’m looking forward to having more grocery store options.

  5. 2007 April 25

I was thinking the same thing. It’s already a pain to park over there.

  6. 2007 April 26

With M.O.M. opening and Wegmans comming soon Frederick will have tons of great options!

My daughter just started working there today! She loves it.

Just curious: Is M.O.M. a co-op like Common Market?

  9. 2007 April 27

Tam, I don’t think so. If you go to their website (click on Guy’s link in the first sentence of this post) you can read about their concept. If I read it right, they do rely on local (or regional) produce, but it appears to be a new breed of grocery store.

    Their website is pretty interesting.

We went this morning – it was pretty empty around 10am… I was surprised! I thought the store would be a bit larger – they only have a small portion of that big building!

The prices seem to compare with Whole Foods or the Common Market. I was more impressed with TCM’s grand re-opening though. MOM’s bulk section seemed smaller that TCM, but they had a larger grocery department.

  11. 2007 April 28

Joe, that’s so interesting about the size of the store. Did you happen to notice if there was another business in the rest of the building? I assumed that MOM’s had the whole building as well.

Good news? or Bad news? Starbucks has made a deal and will be downtown Frederick. Rumor has it (and it’s a great source) that they’ll be in the building off Market St where the Velvet Lounge used to be. Personally, I think it sucks. Even though I like Starbucks, I am an advocate for the local, small business owner. The coffee shops downtown are going to suffer. I will continue to make a concerted effort to “buy local”. If we want Frederick to be that ’small-town’ feel, we have to “buy local”.

  13. 2007 April 29

I think Planet replay has the rest of the building.

  14. 2007 April 29

That’s interesting about Starbucks. I wonder how well they’ll compete? You can get Starbucks about anywhere, but Market Street Cafe is one of a kind and Frederick Coffee Co. roast their beans on premises.

I know where I will be going for java downtown and it ain’t Starbucks.

  15. 2007 April 29

Remember that the Common Market is NOT FOR PROFIT! It is a co-0p, owned by its members. MOMs is great and is a local chain, but it is not a co-op.

On another note: BOYCOTT STARBUCKS IN FREDERICK. There are plenty of places to get better coffee at a lower price all over downtown Frederick. What a shame that Starbucks is coming to our town.

I checked out MOM on Saturday at 10am with my wife and 2 kids. We live just down the road so anything that opens up in Westview Prom we take an interest. I thought that it would be jam packed and wasn’t too keen on this, but to my surprise it wasn’t. I guess we got there before the afternoon onslought. I wasn’t too impressed, but am glad it opened up. I thought it would be larger and take up the entire building. For a store that took forever to open up and being small, there must be story behind this. Maybe meeting Frederick county regulations caused its delay. Wasn’t all a waste. At least my daughter got her face painted so for her it was well worth the trip.

Still wating for a Trader Joe’s to sail into Frederick. Anyone have any word on them coming to the area? Getting a Joe’s here and a Dinner In The Sky (http://www.dinnerinthesky.com/) would be cool.

No idea about Trader Joe’s, but we had one near us in Chicago and loved it. Is it true we’re getting a Cheesecake Factory?

Best coffee in town in Loco Jonny’s off T.J. Drive. Stopped going to Starbucks after I discovered this place. A bit inconvenient during the week, but on Sat. and Sun. it is my first stop of the day.

@ Jim Eaton, this was a quote from an old article:

The city and Douglas Development are trying to lure Trader Joe’s to the space, but Griffin said the national chain, which carries natural products, supplements and other health foods, has made no commitment, despite a shoppers’ letter-writing campaign encouraged by city officials.

I think I remember that Frederick magazine had called Trader Joes and they said they have no plans to move to Frederick. I’m not sure about that though, can anyone else out there confirm that?

As far as cheesecake factory …

The January 2006 issue of Frederick Magazine reports that the Cheesecake Factory may be coming to Frederick. Mathew Robb reports In The Dish that the Factory will be located ” … within a stone’s throw of FSK Mall.”

    Sounds promissing.

I wonder if it’s in that area on 355 next to Staples, across the street from Panera and Office Depot. There’s been a sign there forever that a new plaza is going there. I think it says Spring, 2007 but nothing is happening last I checked.

Thanks. I’ve wondered about the spot on 355, too. Or, maybe in that Westview part II being developed on Rt. 85?

  22. 2007 May 1

I think this is the plan for the area by the mall and across from Panera. No mention of specific stores though. The brochure says hte first quaretr of 2009 for a delivery date.

It is interesting to note that MOM’s seems so environmentally friendly on the website, but they don’t even have a bike rack.

The Common Market is a local business and we should support it. I try to buy bulk as much as possible and MOM’s has a very small bulk section. Plus the prices were a little bit more on te items that I buy on a regular basis. I know that the Common Market offers their employee’s, even part-timers, insurance which is great.

Frederick is in many ways becoming like Rockville. And yes, Starbucks has been discussion about opening up downtown. I have known about this for awhile. As to the Frederick Coffee Company, my problem is the smell of the coffee beans when they over roast them. I will be checking the other coffee shops out but whether or not I go back to them depends on their hours and soy options.

My Organic Market is amazing! The prices are great for organic food, and they have pretty much everything you can get at a normal grocery store in organic form. Plus a good amount of vegetarian stuff. It’s also great because it’s run entirely on wind power =D

My husband and I checked out MOMs on the afternoon of the grand opening. Parking was not a problem at that time. I was very surprised at the small size of the store. It felt cramped. Of course, I was comparing it to Common Market because it is the only other organic/whole foods store I know of around here. (Yes, I realize that MOMs is a chain and CM is a co-op.)

I have to say, I prefer CM. It is larger, has better bulk and produce sections and the staff are very friendly. Even on opening day, the staff at MOMs seemed kind of stand-offish. Might have been because it was so busy, so staff were rushed. I don’t know.

The prices were about the same. One plus for MOMs is that everyone gets the sale prices. At CM you must be a co-op member to get the sale prices or use store coupons. (Believe me, if we were planning to move away, we’d be co-op members).

Despite that, I’m more inclined to shop at CM. I like supporting a local business and the store itself is nicer. I really expected MOMs to be bigger. Their selections were decent, but everything was so close together.

Oh, and off the top of my head I can count four Starbucks in Frederick. There might be more….and I’m including the new B&N cafe, which sells Starbucks coffee. And I can also buy it in the grocery store! Do we really need another Starbucks location?

That should say, if we *weren’t* planning to move away. haha I will certainly miss Frederick but I long for Amish country, so PA here we come!

I’ve counted 6 Starbucks in the Frederick area: Rt. 26, 7th St., Rt. 40, Westview Promenade, B & N at the mall, and the new Giant in Urbana. Maybe this is dangerous to admit, but I like Starbucks–they sure helped ratchet up the American coffee scene. I also like the local shops, too, though–most American communities don’t have the selection for coffee that we do.

  29. 2007 May 2

For better or worse, visitors to Frederick are always wondering where Starbucks is in downtown. Therefore, I think one is needed, but I’m not so sure we need quite as many elsewhere.

I lament that there’s no Trader Joe’s up here. Maybe I should stop going to the one in Gaithersburg; I wonder how much traffic they get from Frederick County?
