Road Rage

April 12, 2007 · 3 Comments

I think it’s unbelievable what happened yesterday, although I am surprised we don’t hear about this sort of thing more often.

Fortunately, I don’t have to commute on 270 anymore, so I was spared most of the traffic yesterday.

How about you ?  Any inside scoop on yesterday’s incident?  How about your favorite Road Rage story?

I go in pretty early so I missed the incident. Traffic was backed-up this morning and last night b/c they have digital signs out asking for tips about the incident from commuters. There was also a TV news crew there this morning. In case you have a tip this is from the FNP:

Anyone with more information should call the Maryland State Police Frederick barrack at 301-644-4150.

I agree with you Liz, I’m suprised this hasn’t happened before. Sititng on that hell that is 270 for hours everyday could be enough to make even the most peaceful people do irrational things.

Road rage occurs every day but rarely does it end with 2 fatalities. But there are many different forms of road rage out there. For example, I was nearly hit the other day when I was walking in the middle of the day. I was already in the cross walk when this lady blew the stop sign and kept on going. Why? She was to busy talking on her cell phone to pay attention what was around her. Thankfully there was no traffic on the street and I alway make sure to pay attention to traffic when I am walking. This is a form of road rage.

As a volunteer fire fighter, many of the accidents we respond to are caused by inattention or trying to get ahead of some one else. It all falls under road rage. I certainly hope that the driver of the green pick up has a guilty conscious and turns himself in but I doubt it. I hope some one else does turn hi in though.

Several police cruisers and a TV crew were still on the scene and a helicopter surveying the area when I drove by about 10 a.m. enroute to work. I couldn’t see the wrecked vehicle and was wondering what had happened, figuring a crime of some sort had to be involved.

When I later found out it was a road rage incident and that the pickup driver kept going after slamming on the breaks and causing the other guy to swerve and flip over, I found myself wondering: 1) Did the pickup driver get a good look behind him at what happened to the other car? 2) How did the pickup driver feel when he heard that two people had died as a result of his action in the tragic, childish display of anger between both parties?

I also marveled at the fact that, sadly, the couple in the other car–a convertible!!–were not wearing seatbelts even as the guy was engaging in those dangerous antics with the other driver (not that the outcome would have necessarily been different, had they been wearing them).

I’d love to think we’d all stop and remember this kind of pointless waste of life before we get too angry at the next driver who slights us on the highway.
