Nilgiris Sizzlin’ Indian Cuisine
I was driving around the Buckyestown Pike corridor this afternoon and these small, red and white signs stuck in the median and grassy knolls kept catching my eye. I finally was stopped at the light at 85 and Crestwood and could read what it said: “NOW OPEN: Nilgiris Sizzlin’ Indian cuisine: Evergreen Point Plaza, behind the Burger King on Rt 85″
I was in that plaza a week ago and could see that the Shahai Grill was going through renovations. The Shahai, I thought, was a very good Indian joint although it never got a lot of attention. It was a nice, family run restaurant with decent food. My only “beef” with Indian food is that it seems like every single one serves only tandoori chicken, spinach with lentils, and more lentils. I like lentils. I love lentils. I go to Indian restaurants just to eat lentils. But there has to be more.
If you think about it for a minute, India is a nation of over 1 billion people, with thousands of miles of ocean coast. It should be a seafood mecca. I am certain that if you are in a fishing village in India, you would get sick of fish. So why aren’t we exposed to more diversity in Indian restaurants? (note: To be fair, there are some fish dishes on the menu at Bombay Grill downtown) There are hundreds of languages in India, thousands of tribal cultures and I am certain a huge variety of cuisines available.
So, as much as I will miss Shahai, I am looking forward to the prospects of “Sizzlin’ Indian cuisine”. They are also reporting a full service bar area.
If anyone gets there before us, please let us know what you think!

I -almost- ate at Nilgiris this past Sunday evening when I stopped at Bike Doctor, but through the window I saw a handful of employees sitting at a table eating so I wasn’t sure they were open. I’d be eager to see a review, too.
We’ve eaten here a couple of times, and both times we found it to be very good. Not our ultimate favorite Indian restaurant (have to drive to Harrisburg for that), but good. The buffet always has a very large selection, and I was very surprised to find chicken, beef, lamb and goat. The rice dishes were a bit on the gummy side, but not bad at all. The biryani dishes were very good. The naan is delivered hot to your table and is made right. Maybe a little high priced, but a nice place with very good food.
