Restaurant News From Frederick Magazine

2006 October 8
by Liz

Well, it appears the October issue of Frederick Magazine has some bad news for steak lovers.  The rumors of a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse opening in the Westview Promenade are, according to writer J.M. Mosley “as bogus as a three-dollar bill”.

Still though, again according to Mosley, there’s some good news for fans of Vietnamese cuisine.  An Loi, formerly located in the old TJ Meadows site (which has since been torn down) is re-opening on Rosemont avenue, next to Callahan’s.  They are expecting to re-open in late October.   I’m glad to see they plan on keeping the same menu as well.

The Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse rumor seemed to good to be true. I did have a great steak at Dutches Daughter this weekend but it wasn’t as good as Ruth’s. Where else can I get a great steak in Frederick?

It is very hard to find a great steak in Frederick. I eat out quite often and here’s what I’ve found:

    1. Best Filet – Tasting Room. A bit pricey at $35, but it is “perfection”

    2. Best thin-cut NY strip – Barley & Hops

    3. Best thick-cut NY strip – Outback (very sad to say)

I’ve had decent steaks at other places around town, but the three above are very consistent. A friend swears by the steaks at Firestones, but I haven’t tried one there yet.

I saw that Red Horse got top prize for Steak in the Frederick Magazine. I haven’t been in awhile, but the steaks there were always a disappointment. Maybe we’ll give them another try.

    Good luck!

    Guy,

I agree with the selections above whole-heartedly. The NY Strip at B&H is really very good. I love it.

Also in the best of the best is (of course), Monocacy Crossing (at around $26, I think). A fabulous Strip steak, as rare as you like it!

On the inconsistant side, I’d rate the new Longhorn Steak House. They have yet to make a rare cut as rare as I like it (and I always say “as rare as you’ll serve it”) and once the cut was just plain thin and tough.

The Capitol Grille (the Upscale version of Longhorn, same franchise) in the Inner Harbor was an nice experience, but way on the high end (near $40). The Tasting Room beats the Grille hands down and in every other regard.

Firestones has good steaks. Frederick Magazine did a piece on their steak house menu a few issues ago.

The steaks aren’t cheap, but they are tasty!

I seen a few people hanging a sign on the old 711 store that turned into a cafe and closed, then supposed to be An Loi (from TJ meadows) and it never opened on Rosemont Avenue yesterday. The sign stated that it was :Viet Gourmet – Opening soon”. Anybody know if this is the same owners as An Loi. after they decided to open they never sold the place. Wandering if they are trying to make a second go at it under another name?
