Eat Local….Spinach!

The recent tragic outbreak of E. coli, traced to fresh spinach most likely from California, has forced this country to see how most of our produce is grown. Tracing the source of the outbreak can’t be easy, since most fresh fruits and vegetables are grown on massive farms. The irrigation system could be affected or a farm worker may be contaminated in some way. Let’s hope that the source is found and whatever went wrong is fixed.

In the mean time, there was an interesting article in the local section of the News-Post today about a local organic farmer named Rick Hood, owner of Summer Creek Farm in Thurmont. Rick is set to harvest his fall crop of spinach in October and it will be available at local farmer’s markets and at the Common Market. Sounds good to me!
