New Bike Shop in Frederick

2006 April 22
by Guy

From Frederick blogger Quark Cycle:

I was stopping at Pizza Blitz in the Westview Promenade today to pick up our regular Friday pizza. Across from the restaurant I saw that a new bike shop has opened up. They carry mountain, road, and fitness bikes. I noticed Giant and Bianchi road bikes in their stock. I know Wheelbase does not carry either brand, so it looks like bike options will be improving in Frederick.

The shop was not well labeled. I could not figure out its name. There was a repeating sign going across the bottom of the display windows that simply said "fix".

Update: A member of the local bike club, the Frederick Pedalers, tells me that the name of the store is the The Bike Fix.

Thanks for the tip Mike!

I’ve checked out the Bike Fix. So far, they don’t have much stock but they do have a pretty cool repair setup in the middle of the shop. If they fill in their gear stock, it’ll be great to have them as an alternative to Wheel Base and Under the Sun.

Now, if they’d just open a Hudson Trail Outfitters in Frederick…

A hudson trail outfitters would be pretty cool!

There’s also the Bicycle Escape (thebicycleescape.com) on Kingfisher Drive right by Five Guys. One of the best things going is they are open until 8pm Wed. – Fri. making it easy to drop by after work.

Thanks very much for mentioning Bicycle Escape. I wonder why they don’t come up on a Google search for bike shops in Frederick… I’ll have to check them out.

The Bicycle Escape is awesome! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. The shop owner is very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to picking out the right bike for you. It is important to note that he does not try to sell you a bike, but will sell you the right bike. They carry everything for road and mountain biking and carry Specialized, Jamis, Titus, Independent Fabrication, and Orbea. The shop is very clean and well-organized and you can usually find anything you are looking for there from pedals to clothing to nutritional items. And of course, there are a lot of nice bikes in stock. I go there for all of my bicycling needs and this is by far the best shop in Frederick County (I live in PA and still go to Frederick for what I need if that tells you how great this place is). Check it out and I am sure you will agree with me.

I agree, the Bicycle Escape is awesome. Owner was down to earth and was extremely helpful. Great shop, nice layout. Checked out Bike Fix as well. Interesting to say the least. They need some signage. Don’t understand the repeating “fix” but maybe that is their sign. Didn’t really have the time to check it out completely but did notice Giant, Bianchi and Kona.

Bicycle Fix aka “Fix” has stocked a bunch of new stuff, and I noticed on their new website (www.fixfrederick.com) that they are having a grand opening on June 17. Looks like fun.

Agree that it is nice to have options, I’ve visited and done business with both. But it is hard to beat the service and expertise you get at Wheel Base. Those guys have helped me countless times, even when they had the bike business monopoly in town.

I am new to biking and found the people at The Bicycle Escape to be friendly, helpful, knowledgeble, and very down to earth. The owner did not try to sell me a bike or pressure me, what he did do was take the time to ask me questins, find out my needs and then recommend a couple of bikes that would be a good match for me. I am extremely interested in getting a professional fit from him to make certain that my bike and me are a perfect match. All in all I loved this place!

Thanks, analiese for the update of bicycle escape. I think it is a great shop too. It is like a breath of fresh air for the biking community.
Check it out and the website rocks too.

Hi folks…My name is Brian Wisowaty..and I am currently in the process of opening up a shop in Frederick. We are a Maryland based franchise named Bike Doctor who, with Frederick, will have 8 stores all located around Maryland. The shop is opening in the Evergreen Shopping Center home of the new Common Market location as well as the new location for the Frederick Gold’s Gymn.
I am in the process of building out now (with lots still left to do to tie up loose ends) but am shooting for a July 21st (tentative) soft opening with a minor ‘Grand Opening’ coinciding with the Common Markets’.
We do both sales and service (Free life-time Tune-ups with the purchase of any bike) with our main brands being: Trek, Gary Fisher, Cannondale, Seven, Haro, Hoffman, Electra…and perhaps some others to come. Please stop by and say Hi when you have a chance, and I look forward to meeting all of you!

This bike doctor better be better than the other two I;ve visited. They are a franchise for sure, not seeming to feel they have to try extra hard to help its customers. Plus they have been “opening” now for some time, and still no store yet. As for me my loyalty will remain with Tom at the Bicycle Escape in the Shops of Monocacy (next to the five guys and cold stone creamery. The food is great near the bike shop and the bike shopitself is second to none. Come see it, and I know you will agree.

Dave you have to be kidding. I have bought 3 bikes from the Bike Doctor franchise. Each time they have bent over backwards to help me. Every time I have a need for my bike they try, “extra hard”. If this new bike shop is near as good as the one in Arnold MD. It will be the premiere bike shop in the area. I am so excited that I no longer have to travel all the way to Arnold for superior service.

    Brian,
Should you ethically use this forum for an advertisement ???
Hope you don’t do business that way.

What problem is there to use a forum for an advertisement? It is free and gets the message out to people who are genuinely interested in biking and the biking community. I have been to almost all of the Bike Doctor’s and found that the staff’s have been extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Not to mention their higher end stock of bikes to gander at. I have been in buying stuff and people just come in to check out and talk bikes. Bike Doctor is the place to go for anything bikes!!

I agree with Reg, whether intended or not the post seems like a shameless plug especially since this thread had absolutely nothing to do with the Bike Doctor. This site is very nice, i.e. there aren’t advertisements plastered everywhere you look. That means the admin is probably paying for any expense incurred running this site out of his/her own pocket. All I can say is that if I were a business owner, I would not plug my company here unless I had contacted the admin for permission first. In this case, let’s hope the advertiser did just that.

  19. 2006 July 26

I don’t mind if a frederick company wants to provide me or one of the other FredNet bloggers w/ some info to pass along to the readers. I don’t even mind if a company (owner or employee) posts a comment on the site as long as it is above board (e.g. full disclosure).

I am glad to see that everyone is excited about cycling anyway!

Cycling is huge in Frederick that’s for sure. Anyone catch the Gazette article last Thursday about the popularity of Cycling in the Frederick area? It meantions the increase in local bike shops and the author predicts that a Tour De France victory for Floyd Landis will further catapault the Frederick area bike scene into the lime light.(Since Loyd cut his teeth on the mountain around Frederick)

and right by Bicycle Escape, is Cold Stone–which really draws a crowd.
I like to use smaller mom and pop shops tho— so I bring my kids to the ice cream shop in Shab Row (off East St). They have better ice cream than Cold Stone. The new shop name is “Kenzie’s Ice Cream” I believe. Mmmmmmm.

I agree with Reg and ODG in theory… this post initially had nothing to do with Bike Doctor yet the focus of this thread was announcing the opening of another bike shop in Frederick. Well and good. More bike shops breed more competition, which in turn yield lower prices and better service for us as the customers.

But we differ in that I think that jumping all over Brian for essentially saying that he will be opening a Bike Doctor with such and such brands seems to be a bit off the wall. People reading this forum most likely know the brands carried and locations of the other shops around the town … which was all Brian announced. Maybe talking about the lifetime free tune-ups and 7 other locations smacked of advertising but can you blame the guy for being excited about his shop or for trying to explain the services he will provide?

As Frank says the Bike Doctor’s I’ve been in have for the most part provided very good service. This is not to say that they are the be all end all of bike shops, but ruling a store out simply because you think that a post was a shameless plug seems a bit harsh. At least give each of the new shops here in Frederick a try … Bicycle Fix, Bicycle Escape, and Bike Doctor … then choose the one that’s best for you. I know that I will.

As for ODG’s post about Floyd … lets hope that the “B” sample is clean. Fingers crossed.

Even though I’ve been to all of the shops mentioned (and multiple Bike Doctors) I purposely didn’t comment on them because I didn’t want that to be the focus of my post. I wouldn’t suggest ruling out a particular shop just because I didn’t like the way they came across on a message board. I guess I am just a little sensitive to posts of that sort. I used to run a site similar to this, as the years went on and the number of visitors increased it became harder and harder to keep businesses from using the site as their personal billboard. It can be a slippery slope and as I mentioned this site is very nice and currently ad-free. The site admin has already weighed in on his opinion so that’s…that.

I have been going to Tom at Bike Escape since the summer of 2007 and he has been great. I ride a Colnago and everytime I bring it in he treats it with care. Tom is friendly and very bright about the bike business. He is very open and honest. When need of major repairs , he actually takes you by the hand and shows you whats wrong and what needs to be done. I reccommend this place to everyone and its the only bike shop I have come to know , love , and trust. Thanks.

      Hi all,

I have visited the Bike Doctor, Under the Sun and Bike Escape while looking to purchase a new mountain bike. I have talked to the Bike Escape on the phone (more of a guy friendly place than female). I have also went to Hudson Trail Outfitters in Gaithersburg to purchase a $309 Gary Fisher. Unfortunately, after driving to Gaithersburg, the bike shocks were not working properly and were not going to be fixed. My attention was then brought to a more expensive Gary Fisher which I did not need or want. That bike also had some problems. I returned to the Bike Doctor and purchased a Cannondale which I am enjoying. They have lifetime tune-up and Brian was very nice. If he didn’t have it he could get it. Yes the store is a franchise but they are individually owned and managed (in this case Bian) by individuals. Brian knows his stuff. Glad to do business with him and I know he won’t do me over.

I am not sure who I dealt with at Bike Doctors but I bought a Trek 4300 at a great price. I had checked out that same bike in all the local bike stores in frederick, damascus, gaithersburg & rockville and their price beat them all. The 3 or 4 times I have gonne in for my free tuneups they have been nothing but super nice to me. I would recomend this shop anyday. These guys were good and their prices very competitive.

    Mike
