New Frederick Restaurants
I don’t know exactly how new these places are, but they are new to me so I will share.
Henning’s offers authentic German cuisine and more (e.g. bison burgers and crabcakes). It’s located on Thomas Johnson Dr.
Fajita Grande Mexican Restaurant, Bar & Grill is located at 5 Willowdale Drive (301.698.8989) in the Willow Tree Shopping Center. They claim to have the best fajitas in Frederick.
The Cajun Crab has taken the space vacated by the old Schwinn bike shop on the Golden Mile. They offer Maryland & New Orleans style cuisine and have an enclosed bar area.
A FredNet reader (thanks P.H.) has also offered up that the new Thai restaurant located next to Lintini’s on TJ Drive has good food.
And lastly I came across this article about Green Turtle expanding in Maryland. One of the planned locations is Mt. Airy.
Have you tried any of the places above? If so please share your reviews in the comments.

We’ve been to Henning’s. The food was good but I think we went too soon after it opened. There was no real wine list and only a couple beers at the time. I read that they are going to improve that. I got the bratwurst platter which was very good. I’m going to wait a bit before going back to try it again.
We went to the Cajun Crab last on the basis of what we read here. It was delicious. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious.
I’m glad to hear that some of these new places have good food. I will have to check them out. Thanks for the comments!
We had lunch at Fajita Grande today. My husband and I both had the fajitas (me – shrimp, him – chicken and steak). The food was very good, the wait staff was very attentive. We also had desert – desert nachos (basically sopapillas (sp?) with ice cream, whip cream, chocolate sauce, honey, and powdered sugar – can you say YUM???
The restaurant is rather small, but that makes it cozy.
I have been to Hennings twice recently. The food was great (schnitzel, bradwurst platter and reuben all really good) good beer as well, but on a Friday at luch the place was packed and service was kind of slow though they repeatedly appologized about it.
We’ve been to Henning’s twice, and it is a pretty decent German Restaurant. From appetizer to entree to desert, everything is authentic.
The atmosphere is not as nice as at Hagerstown’s Schmankerlstube but generally it is a nice place to have dinner at.
We will definetely become frequent visitors.
I’ve done Henning’s twice, both entree’s were in the upper range of my 1 to 10 scale. Beer selection was good and our desserts were very good. Worth looking up and we will be back. It can’t compete with Schmakerl Stube’s atmosphere and beer garden but is otherwise on par with the better German restaurants in the area and you don’t have to drive 45 minutes to get to Hennings.
‘My Thai’ which is also over in the same area has been sufficient as a Thai restaurant boht times we were there and beats the Heck out of the other Thai restaurant downtown but that, in my opinion, is a cuisine that is poorly represented in Frederick and if a really good Thai restaurant comes along they will clean up.
‘Will have to check out the Fajita Grande but we’re pretty much in love with Mexicali Cantina in spite of the cheesy decor and the fact that it can get really crowded. The new La Paz is all building and pretty location with dog food and bad service from the servers with nice embroidered shirts. It was lousy from the salsa and chips to when we got the check. I won’t go there again, it is no better than it was at it’s old location.
Best restaurants in the area are still Monocacy Crossing, Isabella’s, Zest and the tasting room IMHO and Frederick is so fortunate to have such a huge selection of ‘eateries’ to choose from
just to let you know, the number for the fajita grill is wrong. It is 301.698.8989. I called the one listed and it is not in service
By the way, the fajita grill is very reasonably priced and the food is excellent. The appetizer chips are not all that, but the entrees are good
Thanks for the tip on the phone number! I updated in the post above.
We went to Hennings last night and had a wonderful dining experience. The wait staff was pleasantly helpful and the food was delicious. We would absolutely go back!
Went to Hennings longing for a good schnitzel after recently relocated here from Germany. For a Danish cook, the meals were OK, but not up to German standards.
Nice attentive staff and beer was good though…
I wish we had a Tony Romas here!!!
Have you tried Schmankerl Stube in Hagerstown? The owner is from Baveria. It is really good, and I have heard from a true German that it is authentic. http://www.schmankerlstube.com/index.html
Hey, Darrell, let me guess…you like Tony Romas?
Love hearing about the little quirky places, and quite relieved to hear of good German food. We’re moving after 6 years in Germany (Army post) and yes, you get spoiled.
I’ve been missing seafood, though! the Cajun place sounds nice, and I hear Mays is great. Any other favorites? Not necessarily white napkin joints…
May’s is really good. Liberty Road Seafood is also a good place and very popular. Hope that helps, Edge.
The German expats that I know think Hennings is uneven. Some dishes are good, others are so-so.
Post of the Week (from above): “The new La Paz is all building and pretty location with dog food and bad service from the servers with nice embroidered shirts. It was lousy from the salsa and chips to when we got the check. I won’t go there again, it is no better than it was at it’s old location.”
HaHaHa! Love it.
So if Henning’s is uneven, what would you recommend?
The Smankerlstube in Hagerstown serves quality Bavarian food and excellent beers.
In Shepherdstown, the Bavarian Inn is a great choice, but if you go, go early so you don’t miss the superb window views. The Inn is rather pricey.
Another cool place for some german atmosphere and food is Doener USA in Leesburg, VA. Geared more towards the younger crowd and looks like something you could find in Germany right now vs. the Old World Style of the other places that were mentioned here. Great beer selection and nice outdoor patio. Combine it with a stop at the outlets!

Went to Hennings last night for the third time. Food has been great every time. We get the potatoe pancakes and Jagerschnitzel. I am not really understaning the “not authentic” comments. Perhaps someone can elaborate. I am excited to try the other German recommendations though to compare.
